Applications are open fo NZ’s coolest writing residency, the Surrey Hotel Steve Braunias Memorial Writers Residency In Association With The Spinoff Award. The residency offers $500 cash, accommodation, free breakfast, wifi and pizza at the Surrey Hotel, Grey Lynn, Auckland. Applications close on June 21. 2018 Ockham NZ Book Award Winners Announced

Congratulations to ANZL fellow Elizabeth Smither whose collection Night Horse (Auckland UP) won the Ockham Book Award for Poetry, and member Pip Adam whose novel The New Animals (Victoria UP) won the 2018 $52,000 Acorn Foundation Fiction Prize. The winners received their honours at the glittering Ockham New Zealand Book Awards ceremony, which also marked the Awards’ 50th anniversary, held in Auckland’s Aotea Centre. MKC | Shanghai Residency – Applications Open

Applications for the eight week International Writers’ Residency in Shanghai are now open. This is a partnership between the New Zealand China Friendship Society, the Michael King Writers’ Centre and The Shanghai Writers’ Association. Entries Open for Sarah Broom Poetry Prize

One of New Zealand’s most valuable poetry prizes, the Sarah Broom Prize supports new work from an emerging or established New Zealand poet. In 2018, the prize is an award of $5,000. Poets are required to submit six to eight poems (at least five unpublished). The recipient of the prize will be announced in May 2018 during Auckland Writers Festival week. CNZ Berlin Residency Announced

Congratulations to ANZL member Vivienne Plumb, recipient of the $40,000 biennial Creative New Zealand Berlin Writers Residency 2017/2018. Vivienne will use the eleven month residency to research and write a creative non-fiction work that explores the hidden past of her late mother, Isabel Hurley. For the full press release, see here.

New Landfall Editor Announced

Congratulations to ANZL member Emma Neale, the new editor for New Zealand’s biannual and longest-running arts and literary journal Landfall. Emma will replace David Eggleton who was editor for a record eight years.

Grimshaw Sargeson Fellowship Applications Open

This national literary award offers published New Zealand writers, both here and overseas, the opportunity to focus on their craft full-time by providing an annual stipend of $20,000 at the Sargeson Centre in Auckland. Randall Cottage Residency Open

Applications are now open for the 2018 Creative New Zealand Randell Cottage Writers Fellowship. The succesful applicant works on an approved project from July to December, with a stipend of $22,000, and six months’ rent free accommodation in Wellington. Deadline Friday, 3 November 2017. The Michael King Writers’ Centre, Auckland, is offering new 2018 residencies for up to 13 writers. Established, experienced, mid-career or emerging authors can apply to stay for as little as a fortnight. A Pasifika residency has been added to support Pasifika writing.
